Brownsea Island Swim 2007

Silverware, smiles and sunshine -
a perfect Sunday in Sandbanks

With the sun finally deciding to show its face on the bustling Dorset port of Poole, conditions looked good for the annual 4.6 mile ‘Around Brownsea Island Swim’.

Undeterred by the predicted start time of 9am Michelle Dige, Rosemarie Green and Matt Wardle took up the challenge, and presented themselves at Lifeguard HQ between 7 and 8 for registration as requested. After registration was complete they were ferried from the harbour side across to the National Trust controlled island of Brownsea and awaited the sound of the starters claxon from the old pier.

Swimmers had the choice of whether to enter to swim in a wetsuit or just the standard swim suit, the obvious choice for the more hardy seasoned channel hardened individuals.

Matt Wardle managed to get on top of his recent back problems to cross the finish line adjacent to
the Brownsea Castle Beach in first place overall in a time of 1hr 20.45. It goes without saying that Matt elected not to take up the option of a wetsuit.

Michelle Dige crossed the line some 12 minutes later in a time of 1hr 32.28 to take the title of 1st female in the Wetsuit category.

Rosemarie Green crossed the line a further 12 minutes later in a very respectable time of 1hr 44.00.

Well done to all three.

The challenge has now been issued by the three to the rest of the club to join them next year. Who knows with the raised sea levels predicted with the onset global warming, the distance maybe considerably shorter at the start of the 2008 event.
